The Social Media SUPER BOWL

AS THE DENVER BRONCOS AND CAROLINA PANTHERS PREPARE FOR SUPER BOWL 50 THIS WEEK, SO DOES ANOTHER PAIR OF TEAMS LOOKING FOR THE TOP SPOT.  LAST YEAR, BOTH TWITTER AND FACEBOOK POSTED MEASUREMENTS OF ACTIVITY DURING THE BIG GAME HIGHER THAN EVEN THEY PREDICTED.  FACEBOOK SAW OVER 265 MILLION POSTS WHILE TWITTER HEARD THE SOUNDS OF OVER 28 MILLION TWEETS. IN LESS THAN ONE WEEK, ALL OF THE TRAINING OUR FINGERS HAVE DONE THE LAST YEAR (ESPECIALLY OUR THUMBS), WILL BE ON CENTER STAGE. WHICH TEAM ARE YOU CHEERING FOR?

Much has changed in one year.  The development of the hashtag, increase in popularity for both video and images across both Twitter and Facebook, and really the overall "goes without saying" concept now falls under several categories for both Social Kings as well. Which is nice. Companies no longer feel obliged to putting a small Twitter or Facebook icon at the end of a commercial or advertisement like before, it goes without saying they have a presence on Social Media. Sure, Facebook and Twitter will flourish any day of the week, but this weekend can literally make or break a brand for 2016 -  What to post?  When to post? Facebook or Twitter?  What do I do??  Help Me!!  You get the point. So enough with the small talk, what do you say we meet our starting line-ups?

Facebook

- The true veteran of the game, Facebook brings 10+ years of experience to the field, as well as one of the most brilliant Social Media Marketing minds calling the shots from the sideline, Mark Zuckerberg.

-Facebook is really becoming more of a resource for Generation X then Millennials when you think about it.  Yeah, I still jump on Facebook, don't get me wrong.  But I feel Twitter and Instagram are more of the preferred Social Media platforms for Millennials these days in comparison to when Facebook launched in 2004. Twitter is still sort of intimidating for Generation X.

-Earlier this month, Facebook Sports Stadium was launched as a new feature on facebook. All content on Facebook related to a particular game of your choice is all in the same place. Posts from experts, live stats and play-by-play and where to access the game on television, radio, podcast, etc. This could be the "X-Factor" in the game this year. Hashtags in a way create a specific playing field for a certain event, but you still need to know where to look and it normally won't all be in one place.

-Facebook does have a bigger team on the sidelines, that is no secret.  But sometimes Goliath does not always come out on top.

Twitter

-AKA "the earth's biggest and most arrogant sports bar," Twitter is not looking so hot a week away from the big game.  Their stock is at a record low, and 4 of their starters (executives) got the ax recently. Not the best off-season.

-Twitter does have the home field advantage this year.  The Twitter headquarters is just a stone's throw down the road, and will be hosting a "Blue Room" for professionals and Twitter hot-shots to tweet during the game. Twitter makes any game feel like it's in your backyard, but this year it really is. Not to mention California had the most Tweets by state last year during the game.

-Twitter did do a little recruiting over the last few months before the big game, partnering with the NFL on Super Bowl emojis. Only available on Twitter, they will use hashtags such as #KeepPounding for a Carolina Panthers logo, as well as a #BroncosCountryPlayoffs for a Denver Broncos logo.

-The "Moments" feature will again be the place to be in Twitter-Land on Sunday, February 7th.  A Super Bowl tab will be available, making it that much easier to access anything and everything Super Bowl 50. Since being implemented last year, "Moments" is designed to highlight the most trending topics, events, or people in the world.

Both Twitter and Facebook feel that have something to prove on Sunday, February 7th. Coming off of a great fourth quarter in 2015 and with a newly launched feature, (Facebook Sports Stadium) Facebook looks to have it's best game yet. Twitter had a bit rougher of an off-season since the last meeting in Super Bowl XLIX. Like I said earlier, four executives have recently been laid off at Twitter, but sometimes change can be a good thing (ask Peyton). So make sure that battery is charged, step up your snack food game, and rest those fingers up. We have a big weekend ahead of us.
